During law school I had a pivotal experience working with debtors in the University of St. Thomas’ Interprofessional Center for Counseling and Legal Services. I had a client who was facing extreme hardship stemming from her son’s medical conditions, and the discharge we eventually got for her, lifted a great burden off her family’s shoulders. Seeing the impact that unplanned debt can have on individuals first-hand, and learning the realities of a complex legal system, led me to pursue a career where I could help people get a fresh start.
I have spent my entire life in Minnesota and I love everything about it: its lakes, its breweries, the Twin Cities, the sports teams, and most importantly, the people. My whole family is from Anoka County, and we were brought up to value our community and to do onto others as you would have them do unto you. During college I got involved with the UMD Tutoring Center, and helped undergraduate students deal with the enormous pressures of struggling to keep up with their classes. Then in law school I served as the Writing Fellow for first-year students who needed help with their research and writing projects. Most of my classmates had no trouble with their assignments once I was able to alleviate some of their stress.
Bankruptcy is not a complicated process when you have a clear understanding of your rights and its purpose. When I meet with clients, my goal to paint the picture as clear as possible for them, so they can consider all their options and the ramifications. Creditors often have the luxury of teams of lawyers, and I hate to see people suffering at the hands of these large faceless organizations. I can truly relate to the pressures of overwhelming debt and uncertainty about how to move forward. My clients always leave our meetings with a clear-cut and straightforward plan.
When I’m not in the office you can find me constantly on the move, whether traveling, hiking, biking or snowboarding. I love competing and the outdoors; from the Boundary Waters Canoe Area, to the local parks in the cities, and all the gorgeous trails in between. In my free time I play the guitar (poorly) and take long walks with my dog “Miley.”
